The Joan Scarangello Foundation to Conquer Lung Cancer is committed to fight lung cancer by funding innovative research into early detection and more effective treatments, and by increasing awareness of the world’s leading cancer killer.
Through its Research Grant Program, Joan's Legacy spurs the development of innovative research initiatives. In just three years, Joan’s Legacy has awarded more than $1.1 Million in direct research grants to the finest cancer centers in the United States, built a national broadcast journalism awards program in honor of its namesake, and raised awareness of lung cancer throughout the country. The first nonprofit to identify and cultivate lung cancer research, with a special focus on raising awareness of non-smoking-related lung cancer, Joan’s Legacy has quickly become recognized as the “venture capital” for lung cancer research in the U.S.
The foundation is named for Joan Scarangello McNeive, a gifted writer, life long New Yorker and nonsmoker who died at age 47 in 2001 after a valiant nine-month fight with lung cancer. Started by her legion of family and friends, Joan’s Legacy is now a leading resource in the search for new treatments and a cure for lung cancer, and the end to the smoking-related stigma that plagues victims of the lung cancer diagnosis.
