B*CURED, which stands for Brain Cancer Understanding, Research, Education, and Development, was founded by Melissa Salamé and Debbie Needle, both of whom lost parents to brain cancer.
Brain cancer is the leading cause of childhood cancer deaths and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in young adults ages 20 to 39. Within the next 12 months, over 200,000 people in the USA will be diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor, and the incidence is on the rise. Brain cancer has one of the highest mortality rates of any type of cancer and, at this time, research is underfunded. With new developments on the horizon, now is an exciting time to be involved with research into brain cancer.
B*CURED was founded to address the need of focusing attention on brain cancer at this critical time. Working with a medical advisory team from Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center, Yale New Haven Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Tufts Medical Center, B*CURED will disburse grants to promising young investigators working on ground-breaking research into brain cancer and brain tumors.
