Every nine minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma. These diseases are cancers that originate in the bone marrow and lymphatic tissues. They result from an acquired genetic injury to the DNA of a single cell, which becomes abnormal (malignant) and multiplies continuously. The accumulation of malignant cells interferes with the body’s production of healthy blood cells and can leave the body unable to protect itself against infection.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was founded in 1949 by the deVilliers family who had lost their only son to leukemia and recognized the need for a separate organization dedicated to finding cures for the disease through research. Since that time, the Society has devoted more than $240 million for research specifically targeting blood-related cancers, currently providing $36 million annually in grant funding.

In addition to the Society’s outstanding research efforts, we offer the most comprehensive array of services to patients and families touched by blood-cancers, including informational/educational and emotional and financial support services.
