Strang Cancer Prevention Center is dedicated to research to prevent cancer and promote cure through early detection. Founded in 1933, Strang has a long, proud history as a pioneer in the field of cancer prevention. Strang's history began as the Kate Depew Strang Clinic of The New York Infirmary for Women and Children on East 15th Street in New York City, and the Strang name is associated with two of the most important tests for early cancer detection—the Pap test for cervical cancer, and sigmoidoscopy for the prevention of colon cancer.

Strang has developed medical and research programs designed to focus on the prevention and early detection of cancer with specific focus on breast, colon and prostate. Strang scientists are studying altered cell growth and cell damage at the genetic, molecular, cellular, hormonal, and metabolic levels. They are searching for markers that can identify alterations at the earliest possible stages in the process leading to cancer. As Strang researchers understand the basic mechanisms of the causes of cancer, they can move to find strategies to interrupt the progression of cells from normal, to pre-cancer, to cancer, and prevent the disease.
